Lee County, Gasparilla Island on Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande, Florida: the Tarpon Capital of the World

A railroad built for phosphate brought the first winter visitors to Gasparilla Island, and the giant tarpon in Boca Grande Pass made them stay. Here is how the island won its fishing name, when the tarpon tournaments run, and what to cook when the fish you keep is a snook from the harbor.

Phosphate, a railroad and a fish

Gasparilla Island sits at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor, and Boca Grande is the village on its south end. The Calusa lived here by 800 or 900 A.D. By the late 1870s fish ranches were working the harbor, and one at the island's north end, Gasparilla, salted down big catches of mullet for Havana. Many of its fishermen were Spanish or Cuban.

Then came phosphate, found on the Peace River above Punta Gorda in 1885. Boca Grande Pass is one of the deepest natural inlets in Florida, so the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad was finished across the island in 1907, ending at a 1,000 foot pier. The port ranked fourth busiest in Florida in 1969, and the line was abandoned in 1979.

The trains carried people as well as rock. By 1910, the Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce says, the pass was already famous among anglers for tarpon fishing like nowhere else. The railroad company laid out a village with a depot, shops and the shaded stretch of Second Street now called Banyan Street, and wealthy northern families built winter homes. The causeway opened in 1958, and the old rail bed is now the island's bike path.

How tarpon fishing works here

Tarpon are not a fish you eat. In Florida they are catch and release only, and any tarpon over 40 inches has to stay in the water unless the angler holds a tarpon tag and is chasing a state or world record. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also has rules written just for Boca Grande Pass. All year, no gear with a weight hanging below the hook may be used there. In April, May and June, a boat may put out no more than three lines at a time, and breakaway gear is banned.

The tournaments have changed with the rules. The Boca Grande Club started an invitational in the early 1980s, and in the early 1990s the chamber took it over as the World's Richest Tarpon Tournament, with first place worth more than $100,000. It moved from weighing fish to all release in the 2000s and is still fished with live bait only. Earlier in May, the Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament opens the season with a field of around 40 boats.

From the lineup

Bottles for a harbor supper

The tarpon go back. A legal snook, a slot redfish or a few snapper come home, and these three cover them.

RiverKingz All Purpose Rub

Mild, 4 oz, $9

Garlic forward with a savory base and hardly any heat. It seasons mild white fish without covering it up.

Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

Some Heat, 8 fl oz, $12

Hook Set is our hot sauce: red jalapeño, roasted red pepper and a lime finish. A spoonful whisked into brown butter makes a pan sauce in seconds.

Gulf Coast Blackening

Some Heat, 3 oz, $9

Deep, smoky and herby with a pepper build, for a mangrove snapper or a redfish within the slot.

Cook it at home

Snook with Hook Set brown butter

The state allows no commercial harvest or sale of snook, so this one is for anglers with a snook permit who land a legal fish in an open month. The meat is white, mild and firm. Skin the fillets and keep the seasoning simple.

What you need

  • 2 lb skinless snook fillets, cut in portions
  • RiverKingz All Purpose Rub
  • 2 tbsp neutral oil
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp Hook Set Sauce
  • Lime wedges and chopped parsley

How it goes

  1. Pat the fillets dry and trim any dark strip along the center line. Season both sides with RiverKingz.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high until it shimmers. Lay the fish in, best side down, and cook about four minutes without moving it, until golden.
  3. Turn the fillets, lower the heat to medium and cook three to four minutes more, until the thickest part flakes and the center is opaque. Move the fish to a warm plate.
  4. Wipe out the pan, drop in the butter and let it foam on medium until it smells nutty and turns light brown, about two minutes.
  5. Take the pan off the heat, whisk in the Hook Set Sauce, and spoon it over the fish. Finish with parsley and lime.
Worth knowing. No legal snook? Redfish or mangrove snapper fillets take the same method and the same timing.
