Baldwin County, Alabama's Gulf beaches

Gulf Shores, Alabama: the town that throws a shrimp festival

Each October a quarter of a million people walk onto the public beach in Gulf Shores to eat shrimp every way it can be cooked. The party has been running since 1971. Here is how shrimp shaped this beach town, and how to cook it at home.

Alabama's original beach party

The National Shrimp Festival has been held on the second weekend in October since 1971, according to the Encyclopedia of Alabama. The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber runs it with hundreds of volunteers, and its own site calls it Alabama's original beach party. Organizers put the crowd at nearly 250,000 over four days, and getting onto the festival grounds costs nothing.

The food is the main act. More than 50 local and regional vendors cook shrimp boiled, fried, steamed and every other way, alongside crab cakes, conch fritters and lobster rolls. Two stages run music all four days, and there are arts and crafts booths, a sand sculpture contest, a children's village, a 5K and a pageant. The grounds sit at the public beach where Highway 59 meets East Beach Boulevard.

The 2026 festival was set for October 8 to 11 and then called off. Organizers canceled it because of Tropical Storm Isaias, citing forecasts of high winds, heavy surf and rain all weekend, and put the safety of visitors, vendors and volunteers first. The chamber has already posted the next one: October 7 to 10, 2027.

How shrimp built a beach town

Until the 1940s this was mostly beach and wetland that few people could reach. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, finished in 1937, opened the area up. The first beach hotel went up in the early 1940s at the end of a rough road, and the post office opened in 1947. Gulf State Park was dedicated in 1939 and now covers 6,150 acres, with two miles of beach.

Shrimping grew with the town. Local boats worked from around 1918, mostly catching bait for other fisheries. Around 1956, deep water trawling for shrimp to sell as food became common, and shrimp turned into an economic mainstay. That same year residents won a city charter, which a judge threw out in 1957 before the Alabama Supreme Court restored it in 1958. The town has since come back from Frederic in 1979, Ivan in 2004 and Sally in 2020.

Bottles for a shrimp festival kitchen

Shrimp is the headliner here, so these three are built around it.

Port A Shrimp Shack

Some Heat, 3.5 oz, $9

The shrimp shaker. Toss it in a boil pot or rub it on dry; celery, coriander and a citrus lift do the work either way.

Beautiful Sunset

Mild, 3.5 oz, $9

Orange peel and ancho, gentle and faintly sweet. A good choice when the kids are eating the shrimp too.

Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

Some Heat, 8 fl oz, $12

Our hot sauce, made from red jalapeño and roasted red pepper and finished with lime. Stir it into mayonnaise for anything on a bun.

Cook it at home

Gulf Shores shrimp burgers

Chopped shrimp pressed into patties, seared in a skillet and stacked on a soft bun. The seasoning goes into the mix, and the hot sauce goes into the mayo.

What you need

  • 1 1/2 lb Gulf shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • Port A Shrimp Shack
  • 1 egg, 1/2 cup panko and 3 scallions
  • 4 soft buns, lettuce, 1/3 cup mayonnaise and Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

How it goes

  1. Pulse a third of the shrimp in a food processor to a coarse paste, and chop the rest by hand into small pieces.
  2. Mix both with the egg, panko, sliced scallions and 2 tsp Port A Shrimp Shack. Shape four patties and chill them for 20 minutes so they hold together.
  3. Heat a film of oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties 3 to 4 minutes a side, until browned and the shrimp inside is opaque all the way through.
  4. Stir the mayonnaise with Hook Set Sauce until it is as hot as you like it.
  5. Toast the buns, spread on the sauce, and build the burgers with lettuce.
Worth knowing. Keep half the shrimp in real chunks. The paste binds the patty, and the chunks make it taste like shrimp instead of a fish cake.
