Plaquemines Parish, the Mississippi River Delta

Venice, Louisiana: Tuna Town at the bottom of the map

Venice sits near the southeastern tip of Louisiana, right where the Mississippi River pours into the Gulf. Offshore boats leave its marinas for yellowfin tuna, and the marsh around it is full of redfish. Here is how the fishing year runs, and what to do with a tuna steak.

Where the river runs out

Louisiana's tourism office calls Venice the jumping off point for some of the finest fishing anywhere, and gives it two nicknames, Tuna Town and the Redfish Capital of the World. It is a working fishing town before it is anything else, built around marinas, lodges and charter docks rather than a main street. The roadside marker for the Southernmost Point in Louisiana is the other reason people pull over.

Plaquemines Parish runs down both sides of the Mississippi through one of the world's great deltas, and the parish tourism office puts it plainly: fishing here is a way of life. Offshore boats run to spots anglers say like scripture, the Midnight Lump, South Pass and the Western Delta Blocks. They fish oil rigs and reefs, or troll and kite open water for tuna, wahoo, marlin and swordfish, with amberjack, cobia, grouper, snapper, tarpon and tripletail on the list too.

Inshore is a different trip and just as good. Guides work grass edges and oyster reefs for redfish and speckled trout, from trophy bulls to slot fish for the table, and pick up flounder, sheepshead and black drum along the way. One longtime guide on the parish list says bull reds up to 30 pounds and trout up to 8 pounds are not uncommon in the lower delta. Another fly fishes for giant bull reds from Hopedale to Venice in fall and winter.

Rodeo season at the marinas

The parish calls itself the capital of fishing rodeos in Louisiana. Venice Marina and Cypress Cove Marina run tournaments through spring and summer, from the Louisiana Gulf Coast Billfish Classic at the end of May to the Faux Pas Lodge Invitational on the last weekend in July. The Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic takes its name from the Mississippi Canyon and Green Canyon offshore, and the parish notes Louisiana's state record yellowfin weighed 240.19 pounds.

Rodeo weekends are when the docks eat best. The Cane Pole Fishing Rodeo at Venice Marina, new in 2025, fed its anglers pastalaya, pork loin and a shrimp boil each night. At home the best move with a fresh tuna steak is the simplest one: a dark spice crust, a screaming hot pan and a rare center.

Eat and shop local

Where to eat and what to bring home from Venice

The places we would send a friend: kitchens locals swear by and shops worth the stop. Every one was open when we checked in October 2026. Hours run seasonal on the coast, so call ahead.

Venice is a fishing town at the end of Highway 23 with a handful of marina kitchens and no real gift shops we could confirm. For citrus stands and more places to eat, Belle Chasse is a little over an hour north. Satsumas and navel oranges are sold at roadside stands along Highway 23 from October into winter.

From the lineup

What we would bring to Venice

One for the tuna, one for the tacos, one for the fish fry.

Gulf Coast Blackening

Some Heat, 3 oz, $9

Dark, smoky and herby. It builds the crust on seared tuna and does the same job on redfish and snapper.

Cold Water

Medium, 3.5 oz, $9

Our Latin blend of dried lime, cumin, ancho and Mexican oregano. Rub it on wahoo or tuna and you have fish tacos at the lodge.

Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

Some Heat, 8 fl oz, $12

Our Hook Set hot sauce, for fried trout, boiled shrimp and a tray of oysters.

Cook it at home

Blackened yellowfin, seared rare

Tuna is the one fish you want barely cooked. A cast iron pan blackens the spice crust while the middle stays red and cool. Start with very fresh fish that has been kept on ice from the boat.

What you need

  • 2 yellowfin tuna steaks, 1 to 1.5 inches thick
  • Gulf Coast Blackening
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or neutral oil
  • Lime wedges
  • Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

How it goes

  1. Pat the steaks dry and let them sit out for 15 minutes.
  2. Brush with butter and press Gulf Coast Blackening onto every side in a thick, even coat.
  3. Get a heavy iron pan smoking hot on your strongest burner. Outdoors on a side burner is best.
  4. Sear about 1 minute per side for rare or 2 for medium rare, and roll the edges in the pan for a few seconds too.
  5. Rest 2 minutes, cut into thick slices against the grain, and plate with lime and a little Hook Set Sauce.
Worth knowing. Thick steaks forgive you and thin ones do not. If yours are under an inch, sear one side hard and give the other side only a few seconds.

Another one from our kitchen: Blackened Redfish
