Kemah, Texas: the bay town that blesses its boats

A shrimp fleet moved to Kemah when the Clear Creek Channel opened in the 1950s, and the town has blessed its boats every spring for more than half a century. Here is what Galveston Bay gives up, and when, plus oysters off the grill.

Grilled Gulf Oysters

From Evergreen to a shrimp port

Kemah sits on State Highway 146 at the mouth of the Clear Creek Channel, looking out over Galveston Bay. In 1898 the Kipp and Bradford families laid out a townsite here beside the new Texas and New Orleans Railroad and called it Evergreen. A storm flattened it in 1900, the families built big homes and started again in 1901, and when a post office came in 1907 the town took a new name. Kemah, the city says, is a Karankawa word meaning facing the winds.

Water paid the bills from the start. The Texas Historical Commission marker at City Hall credits boat building, commercial fishing and tourism with growing Kemah to about 1,300 people by 1922. A bridge tied it to Seabrook in 1929. Then, after the Clear Creek Channel opened in the 1950s, a large shrimp fleet settled here, and for a generation Kemah was a shrimping town. It took heavy storm damage in 1961, recovered, and incorporated in 1965.

The waterfront looks different now. The 60 acre Kemah Boardwalk opened in 1998 and is the city's biggest attraction and largest employer, with the Lighthouse District of restaurants and shops beside it. The shrimp boats that built the place are fewer, but the town has kept the ceremony that honored them.

The Blessing of the Fleet

Every spring decorated boats line up in Clear Lake and parade down the Clear Creek Channel past the Boardwalk, where a pastor blesses each one for a safe and plentiful season. The Daily News in Galveston described it as a tribute to the area's fishing and shrimping culture. In 2023, the 55th year, crews threw beads to the crowd on the Boardwalk and judges scored the boats as they went by.

The water the fleet works is Texas oyster country too. Texas Parks and Wildlife has noted that every private oyster lease in the state lies in Galveston Bay, and that most of the public reefs fished in Texas are in Galveston, Matagorda and San Antonio Bays. Public oyster season runs November 1 to April 30, weekdays only, in areas the state has open.

From the lineup

What we would bring to the bay

A hot sauce for raw and grilled oysters, a garlic rub for the butter, and a shrimp seasoning for the bay catch.

Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

Some Heat, 8 fl oz, $12

Louisiana style, red jalapeño and roasted red pepper with a lime finish. A few drops on a grilled oyster is all it needs.

RiverKingz All Purpose Rub

Mild, 4 oz, $9

Garlic first, deep and savory, almost no heat and low salt. Stir it into melted butter for oysters or brush it on fish.

Port A Shrimp Shack

Some Heat, 3.5 oz, $9

A boil seasoning that works dry. Toss bay shrimp in it before the grill, or use it in the kitchen pot.

Cook it at home

Grilled Galveston Bay oysters

Oysters on the half shell, cooked over a hot grill in seasoned garlic butter until the edges curl. Shuck them first, or let the heat pop them open.

What you need

  • 2 dozen fresh oysters in the shell, scrubbed
  • 8 tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 tsp RiverKingz All Purpose Rub
  • 2 tbsp grated parmesan, optional
  • Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce
  • Saltine crackers or French bread

How it goes

  1. Heat the grill to high. Stir the RiverKingz into the melted butter.
  2. Shuck the oysters and keep them in the deeper half shell with their liquor. If you cannot shuck, set them flat side up on the grate until they open, then remove the top shell.
  3. Spoon a teaspoon of the garlic butter into each shell and add a pinch of parmesan if you like.
  4. Grill 4 to 6 minutes, lid closed, until the butter bubbles hard and the oyster edges curl and firm up.
  5. Lift them off with tongs, add a few drops of Hook Set Sauce and eat them with crackers or bread for the butter.
Worth knowing. Set the shells in a muffin tin or on a bed of rock salt before they go on the grill so the butter does not spill into the fire.
