Dunedin, Florida: bagpipes, breweries and a Saturday market

Two Scotsmen named this town after Edinburgh, and Dunedin has never stopped playing the pipes. Downtown is small enough to walk from one brewery to the next. Here is the story, the festival calendar, and a pan of beer simmered brats to make at home.

Edinburgh on the Gulf

According to the Dunedin Scottish Arts Foundation, Scottish families settled the town in 1899. Two Scotsmen, J.O. Douglas and James Sumerville, named it Dunedin, the Gaelic form of Edinburgh, their home city. The name stuck, and so did the culture.

The pipes came later and by accident. When Dunedin Highland Junior High opened in 1957, a reporter named Bob Longstreet, later the town's mayor, had the idea of a school pipe band. A set of bagpipes arrived from Scotland, a newly arrived piper named Matt Forsythe offered lessons, and soon there were school bands and a city band. In 1964 Dunedin paired with Stirling, Scotland as a sister city, and Summerside on Prince Edward Island joined in 2000. The foundation puts it simply: a function in Dunedin is not complete without a piper.

The modern draw is beer. Dunedin Brewery has been brewing since 1996 and calls itself the oldest distributing microbrewery still operating in Florida, with a pub kitchen and a stage for live music on Douglas Avenue. Visit St. Pete Clearwater lists a string of others within walking distance, including HOB Brewing, Caledonia Brewing, 7venth Sun, Soggy Bottom, Cueni and Woodwright.

Between pints, the county guide points to Casa Tina for family run Mexican food, Eli's Bar B Que on Fridays and Saturdays only, Happy's Bayou Bites for Cajun plates under the oaks, and Strachan's Homemade Ice Cream for dessert. The Pinellas Trail runs right through downtown.

Market mornings and the causeway

The Dunedin Downtown Market sets up every Saturday all year and on Fridays from November through June, with produce and locally made goods. It took Best Market in the 2025 Best of St. Pete Clearwater awards.

West of downtown, the Dunedin Causeway runs out across St. Joseph Sound to Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island state parks, with people fishing, paddling and swimming along the way. Dunedin is in the FWC's Tampa Bay region, so snook here follow the regional slot of 28 to 33 inches, closed in winter and again in summer.

What we would bring to a brewery cookout

Beer town food is sausages, wings and smoked meat. These three cover the table.

Mobile Bay Mustard BBQ

Medium, 8 fl oz, $12

Tangy mustard BBQ with rounded sweetness. It was made for sausage and grilled chicken, and it loves a cold lager.

Knock Your Sauce Off

Some Heat, 8 fl oz, $12

Our wing sauce: red fresno, roasted garlic, guajillo, honey and lime. Pub wings at home, with some heat.

Turnpike Smoke

Medium, 3.5 oz, $9

Smoked paprika, chipotle and mesquite with no sugar. For a pork shoulder or chicken quarters on the smoker.

Cook it at home

Beer simmered brats with mustard BBQ onions

A pint of something local, a pan of onions and a pack of bratwurst. Simmer first, grill second, and sauce last so the sugar in the BBQ sauce does not burn.

What you need

  • 5 fresh bratwurst
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 1 tsp RiverKingz All Purpose Rub
  • 2 bottles or cans of ale or lager
  • Mobile Bay Mustard BBQ
  • 5 sturdy rolls

How it goes

  1. Soften the onions in a little oil in a wide pan with RiverKingz, about 10 minutes over medium heat.
  2. Add the brats and pour in the beer to come halfway up. Bring to a bare simmer and poach 12 to 15 minutes, turning once. Do not boil hard or the casings split.
  3. Move the brats to a medium hot grill and cook, turning, until browned all over and 160F inside.
  4. Meanwhile let the beer and onions reduce until thick, then stir in a few spoonfuls of Mobile Bay Mustard BBQ.
  5. Brush the brats with a little more sauce in the last minute, then serve in rolls under a heap of the onions.
Worth knowing. Fresh brats are raw pork, so check them with a thermometer. Ground pork is safe at 160F, higher than a whole pork chop.
