Franklin County, east end of the Forgotten Coast

Carrabelle, Florida: a harbor town with a big war story

Carrabelle sits on the Carrabelle River where it meets the Gulf, at the quieter east end of Franklin County. It trained a quarter of a million soldiers for World War II and keeps its police phone in a booth. Here is the town, its fish, and a basket of fried grouper fingers to make at home.

Lumber, schooners and a phone booth

The Carrabelle Chamber of Commerce dates the city to December 24, 1881. Before the Civil War it was a small fishing village, cut off from the rest of Franklin County by the lack of bridges and paved roads. Afterward it became a lumber town, shipping wood from the surrounding forest and turpentine by schooner out of the natural deep water port on the Carrabelle River.

The town's most photographed landmark is much smaller. In the early 1960s the police phone hung in a call box bolted to a building at U.S. 98 and Tallahassee Street, and people kept using it for unauthorized long distance calls. On March 10, 1963, telephone man Johnnie Mirabella and deputy Curly Messer moved an old phone booth to U.S. 98 and put the police phone inside, so officers could stay dry while answering it.

The booth has been shot at, knocked over by a pickup truck and damaged by Hurricane Kate, and one tourist tried to load it into his car and take it home to Tennessee. It has appeared on Ripley's Believe It or Not, The Today Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. A replica stands on U.S. 98 across from the chamber and visitor center, and the chamber invites you to stop for a photo.

Camp Gordon Johnston

The bigger story is the beach. Camp Carrabelle opened in September 1942 and was later named Camp Gordon Johnston. According to the Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum, it used a 20 mile stretch of coast from Alligator Point west, including St. George and Dog Islands, about 165,000 acres in all, to train amphibious soldiers for the D-Day invasion. Around 10,000 troops lived there at a time, and a quarter of a million men trained there before it closed in June 1946.

Later the camp trained harbor craft and amphibious truck companies for the Pacific, and from March 1944 it held German and Italian prisoners of war. The museum sits across U.S. 98 from Carrabelle Beach, with more than 4,000 square feet of vehicles, uniforms, documents and photographs. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.

From the lineup

What we would bring to the harbor

The Riverfront Festival food row runs to grouper, mullet and snapper. Pack for the same fish.

Gulf Coast Blackening

Some Heat, 3 oz, $9

Smoky and herby, with pepper that builds as you eat. Mixed into flour it seasons fried grouper from the inside of the crust.

Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce

Some Heat, 8 fl oz, $12

Our Louisiana style hot sauce. Stirred into sour cream it becomes a dip for fish fingers; straight from the bottle it wakes up fried mullet.

RiverKingz All Purpose Rub

Mild, 4 oz, $9

Mostly garlic and savory depth, with very little salt or heat. Good on a mild snapper fillet for anyone who wants it plain.

Cook it at home

Harbor grouper fingers with a hot sauce dip

Strips of grouper, a light crust and a quick fry: the kind of basket festival stalls hand over the counter. The seasoning rides in the flour, so every piece gets some.

What you need

  • 1 1/2 lb grouper fillet, cut into finger sized strips
  • 1 egg beaten with 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup cornmeal and 1 tbsp Gulf Coast Blackening
  • Neutral oil for frying, about 1 inch deep
  • 1/2 cup sour cream stirred with 1 tbsp Grand Isle Hook Set Sauce
  • Lemon wedges

How it goes

  1. Stir the sour cream and Hook Set Sauce together and keep the dip cold.
  2. Heat the oil to 350F in a deep skillet. Mix the flour, cornmeal and Gulf Coast Blackening on a plate.
  3. Dip each strip in the egg wash, let the extra drip off, then roll it in the seasoned flour.
  4. Fry a few at a time for 3 to 4 minutes, turning once, until golden and the fish flakes at the thickest point.
  5. Drain on a rack and serve hot with the dip and lemon.
Worth knowing. Snapper, trout or any firm white fish cuts into fingers the same way. Keep the strips about the same thickness so the batch finishes together.

Another one from our kitchen: Blackened Redfish
